Tipping in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Tipping around 10% is customary in Bosnian restaurants. In Sarajevo's old town cafes it is common to round up the bill. Tips are usually left in cash on the table.

Bargaining in Bosnia & Herzegovina

Bargaining is not a standard practice in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Prices are generally fixed in shops and restaurants. In traditional bazaars like Baščaršija, light negotiation may be acceptable for handicrafts or multiple items, but keep it polite and friendly. Avoid aggressive haggling.

Scams and safety in Bosnia & Herzegovina

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Sarajevo taxi and currency exchange overcharge

Taxis at Sarajevo airport and around Bascarsija quote 40 to 60 convertible marks for the roughly 12 km run into town, far above the metered fare, which the posted tariff of about 1.90 marks to start plus 1.20 marks per kilometre puts closer to 20. Insist on the meter, take only cars with TA number plates and a roof sign, or book Yellow Cab or Sarajevo Taxi by phone, or use Bolt. Change money at a bank branch in town rather than at an airport booth.

Law Drone, photography and border crossing rules

Drones in Bosnia require BHDCA registration; flying over the Old Bridge in Mostar, the Tunnel of Hope or any government building can trigger 5,000-convertible-marek fines. Photography of police/military is illegal. Crossing into Croatia via Neum corridor: EU/Croatian checks apply both ways; passport + vehicle insurance 'green card' required. Register drones before arrival via bhdca.gov.ba and keep insurance documents in Bosnia separately.

Nature Unexploded landmines from the 1990s war

Landmines and unexploded ordnance from the 1992 to 1995 war still cover about 838 square kilometres, roughly 2 percent of the country, with an estimated 80,000 devices left in the ground. BHMAC counts more than 1,400 affected communities, so this is not a handful of isolated spots. Skull and crossbones signs mark known minefields, but the edges are often unmarked. Never step off paved roads and marked trails near former front lines, around Srebrenica, on Mount Trebevic or in the Dinaric uplands. Skip picnics in neglected meadows and stay out of abandoned buildings. Hike only with a licensed local guide working from a current BHMAC mine map.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Avoid ethnic assumptions

Don't discuss ethnic or religious tensions casually. Bosnia has three constituent peoples (Bosniaks, Serbs, Croats), don't assume everyone shares one identity. Always greet with a handshake as a sign of respect.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Copper coffee sets & kilim rugs

A džezva copper coffee set from Baščaršija in Sarajevo is the classic Bosnian souvenir, perfect for brewing traditional Bosnian coffee at home. Hand-beaten copperware, wool kilim rugs, and Bosnian lokum (Turkish delight) are widely available. Try local rakija flavors and pick up a hand-carved wooden puzzle box.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Almost no tolls

Bosnia and Herzegovina has almost no toll roads. Only short sections near Sarajevo charge a small toll of €2.50–4. There is no vignette system. Road quality varies enormously, main corridors are decent, but secondary routes can be challenging. Fuel is among the cheapest in the region.

Did you know? 4 notes

  • Mostar's Stari Most (Old Bridge) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Local divers jump from its 24-meter height into the Neretva River for tips from tourists.
  • Bosnian coffee (similar to Turkish coffee) is a social ritual. It's served in a special set (dzezva) and should be sipped slowly, never rushed.
  • Bosnia is one of Europe's most affordable destinations. A full meal with drinks can cost under 10 EUR, and accommodation is very budget-friendly.
  • Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, leaving behind mountain resorts still used for skiing today.
