Bargaining is common in traditional markets, bazaars, and with independent vendors. It is a social ritual, so keep it friendly and polite. Fixed prices apply in supermarkets and modern shops. Always negotiate taxi fares before starting your journey if no meter is used.

Scams and safety in Albania

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Pickpocketing and airport bag theft

Thieves work Tirana Rinas airport, inter-city bus hubs in Durrës and the Sarandë beach promenade in teams, one distracts with directions while another slashes a bag or lifts a phone. Incidents peak at arrivals and on crowded furgon minibuses. Carry a cross-body bag under your jacket, keep your phone zipped in a front pocket, and count small change in lek before stepping away from any kiosk.

Law Minor traffic offences mean licence loss

Albanian traffic police issue on-the-spot penalties for offences most countries consider minor: speeding 10 km/h over the limit, wrong-way turns, or missing headlights by day can cost the driver a fine plus a six-month licence suspension and confiscation of the vehicle registration. Renters are liable too. Keep the Green Card, an English-language authorisation and 200–500 euros in cash for fines, and never try to 'tip' your way out.

Nature Aggressive driving and poor road conditions

Albania has some of Europe's highest road-death rates: drivers between Tirana, Durrës and Sarandë overtake on blind bends, potholes and open sewer covers go unmarked, and street lighting fails after power cuts. Some motorists carry firearms and minor disputes escalate. Rent a high-clearance car, avoid night driving in Shkodër or the mountains, and budget 50 euros for a private clinic visit after any incident.

Nature Unexploded ordnance on Northern border trails

Remote hill villages on Albania's northern border with Kosovo, around Bajram Curri, Valbona and Tropojë, still contain unexploded landmines from the 1990s conflicts. GOPR-style mountain rescue does not exist; phone coverage fails in the valleys. Stay on marked trails, hire a local guide in Shkodër, carry a whistle, and never cut across uncleared meadows even if a shortcut looks obvious.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Nods mean the opposite

Nodding means "no" and shaking your head means "yes", the opposite of most of Europe! This catches almost every tourist off guard. Don't refuse offered coffee either, it's central to Albanian hospitality (besa).

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Silver Filigree & mountain honey

Look for hand-crafted silver filigree jewelry in Shkodër, a centuries-old Albanian tradition. Mountain sage honey and organic olive oil from the south make excellent edible gifts. Hand-woven qilim rugs and small bottles of raki (grape brandy) are other popular picks.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Toll roads in Albania

While most roads in Albania are free, tolls apply on the A1 (Rruga e Kombit) and the Thumanë–Kashar expressway. Fees for passenger cars typically range from 100 to 250 ALL. Payment is accepted in cash or by card at toll plazas. No vignette system is currently in use.

Did you know? 4 notes

  • Traffic in Albania flows on the right side of the road. Drivers should be prepared for dynamic local driving habits, especially in urban areas, and exercise caution on narrow mountain roads.
  • Albania has over 170,000 bunkers built during the communist era, roughly one for every 11 inhabitants. Some have been converted into cafes and museums.
  • The Albanian Riviera offers stunning beaches comparable to Croatia or Greece, but at a fraction of the price. It's one of Europe's last hidden gems.
  • In Albania, nodding your head means "no" and shaking it means "yes", the opposite of most countries. It takes some getting used to!
