Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Use the official name

The country's name is sensitive, always use "North Macedonia" (official since 2019). Don't confuse the culture with Greek or Bulgarian. Greet with a firm handshake and maintain eye contact to show respect.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Ohrid pearls & Ajvar

Ohrid pearls, handcrafted from fish scales using a secret technique, are North Macedonia's most iconic souvenir, available only in Ohrid. Ajvar (roasted red pepper spread) is a Balkan staple and a delicious edible gift. Tikveš wines are excellent and affordable. Rakija, filigree jewelry from Ohrid, and traditional hand-embroidered textiles are other great picks.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Motorway tolls in North Macedonia

North Macedonia uses a toll-by-distance system at fixed plazas. Payments are accepted in local currency (MKD) and by credit card. While some major plazas accept EUR, change is always given in MKD. Keep local cash on hand for smaller stations.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Lake Ohrid is one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, estimated at 2-3 million years old. Both the lake and the town of Ohrid are UNESCO sites.
  • Mother Teresa was born in Skopje in 1910. A memorial house museum stands on the site of her birthplace in the city center.
  • The Millennium Cross on Vodno Mountain above Skopje is 66 meters tall and can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. A cable car takes you to the top.
