Tipping in Hungary
Check your bill for a 'szervizdíj' (service charge). If included (10-15%), no extra tip is required. If not, 10% is standard for good service. Always hand cash directly to the waiter rather than leaving it on the table.

Fixed prices are the norm in Hungarian shops. At the Ecseri flea market in Budapest, bargaining on antiques and second-hand goods is expected, start by offering 50–60% of the asking price and settle around 70–80%.
No scam or safety notes in English for this country yet. I add them as soon as they are checked.
Don't clink beer glasses, this tradition dates from 1848, when Austrians clinked beers celebrating the execution of Hungarian generals. Wine and spirits clinking is fine. Always look in the eyes when toasting.
Hungarian paprika (sweet and hot varieties) from Szeged or Kalocsa is a kitchen essential, buy at the Great Market Hall in Budapest. Tokaji Aszú wine is one of the world's greatest dessert wines. Herend porcelain is exquisite but pricey; Zsolnay ceramics offer a more affordable alternative. Pálinka (fruit brandy), Pick salami, and embroidered textiles from Kalocsa are other favorites.
Hungary uses a digital e-vignette system linked to your license plate. Purchase it at nemzetiutdij.hu before entering toll roads. A 10-day D1 pass costs 6,900 HUF. Driving without a valid vignette results in heavy fines. Enforcement is automated via cameras.
