Tipping in Mexico

Tip 10–15% ("propina") in Mexican restaurants, service is rarely included. In tourist areas like Cancún and Mexico City, 15% is standard for good service. Also tip hotel staff, taxi drivers (round up), and tour guides (50–100 MXN per person).

Bargaining in Mexico

Bargaining is expected at Mexican craft markets ("mercados de artesanías"), street stalls, and with souvenir vendors. It is not appropriate in restaurants, shops, or malls. Start at 50–60% of the asking price; a friendly attitude and basic Spanish go a long way.

Scams and safety in Mexico

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Mexico City 'Virtual kidnap' phone calls

In Mexico City, Guadalajara and Cancún hotels, scammers call rooms claiming your relative has been kidnapped and demand 20,000–100,000 MXN pesos immediately by bank transfer. The 'relative' is safe, but the caller has your name and room from a leaked booking list. Never confirm names, hang up and call the person directly on a known number, and report to SECTUR tourist police on 078.

Scam or crime Airport taxi and 'Uber-not-Uber' at AICM

At Mexico City AICM and Cancún CUN airports, touts inside terminals offer 'Uber' or 'taxi seguro' at triple rates (800–1,500 MXN pesos for a 200-peso trip). Worse, some robberies have happened in unregistered cars. Use only authorised yellow 'Sitio' taxis from the booth (pre-paid ticket), or wait for the actual Uber/DiDi driver outside the designated pickup zone, verify the plate against the app.

Health Adulterated alcohol at All-Inclusive resorts

Several tourist deaths in Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum resorts (2017–2024) have been linked to methanol-adulterated drinks at 'open bars'. Symptoms: sudden blackout after 1-2 drinks, slurred speech, chest pain. Mexican health authority COFEPRIS periodically shuts bars. Drink only from sealed bottles in the Riviera Maya, avoid 'unlimited' liquor deals, and budget 25 MXN pesos per water bottle at reputable chains.

Nature Hurricane season and Pacific rip currents

Hurricane season runs June–November; the Yucatán, Acapulco and Baja California face Category 4-5 storms (Otis destroyed Acapulco in 2023). Pacific rip currents at Zipolite, Mazatlán and Puerto Escondido average 15 drownings per year. Travel insurance for hurricane-zone stays is essential. Install Conagua's alert app in Mexican pesos regions, and obey flag warnings at Pacific beaches.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Mind your hand gestures

Don't beckon someone with your palm facing up, it's considered rude and demeaning. "Ahorita" means "sometime soon," not "right now," so don't get frustrated by a different sense of time. Always greet each person individually with a handshake or verbal greeting.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Tequila, Talavera & vanilla

Tequila and mezcal are Mexico's iconic spirits, buy aged (reposado or añejo) varieties from reputable brands. Talavera pottery from Puebla is hand-painted and UNESCO-certified. Mexican vanilla extract from Papantla is the world's original vanilla, far superior to synthetic versions. Artisan chocolate from Oaxaca, embroidered textiles, and hand-blown glass from Jalisco are other excellent picks.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Toll roads safer than free roads

Mexico's toll highways (autopistas) are generally safer and better maintained than free roads (libres). As of 2026, CAPUFE is transitioning to electronic-only tolling; carry a tag or pesos for backup. Toll receipts provide basic insurance coverage while on the road. Dial 078 for the Green Angels roadside assistance.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Mexico has hundreds of taco varieties. Street tacos are the most authentic and cheapest, look for stalls where locals line up.
  • Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula has thousands of cenotes, natural sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water, sacred to the ancient Maya and perfect for swimming.
  • Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead, Nov 1-2) is not a sad occasion, it's a joyful celebration of deceased loved ones with music, food, and colorful altars.
