Tipping in Ecuador

A 10% service charge is legally required on Ecuadorian restaurant bills, but it often goes to the restaurant rather than staff. Leaving an additional 5–10% cash tip directly to your waiter ensures they benefit personally and is customary in Quito and Guayaquil.

Bargaining in Ecuador

Bargaining is expected at Ecuador's indigenous craft markets, especially Otavalo's famous Saturday market, one of the largest in South America. Start at 50–60% of the asking price and be respectful of artisans' skill. Fixed prices apply in regular shops.

Scams and safety in Ecuador

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Guayaquil express kidnap and taxi crime

In Guayaquil and the Quito La Mariscal district, street taxis have abducted tourists to ATMs, forcing withdrawals of 2,000–8,000 USD. Since the 2024 drug-war state of emergency, gov.uk advises against Esmeraldas, Los Ríos and parts of coastal Manabí. Use Uber or Cabify, never flag taxis from the kerb, set daily card withdrawal limits, and avoid all non-tourist-zone movement after dark in USD-denominated regions.

Health Quito altitude and Galapagos sun safety

Quito (2,850 m) gives 50% of arriving tourists altitude sickness within 12 hours; Cotopaxi climbs (5,897 m) need 10+ day acclimatisation. Galapagos sits on the equator with UV index 14+, sunburn in 15 minutes. Take Diamox from Quito Farcoomaseo pharmacies, ascend via Guayaquil (coastal) first, pack UPF-50 clothing for Galapagos, and budget 100 USD daily for Galapagos park fees (cash USD only).

Nature Cotopaxi Volcano and El Niño coastal flooding

Cotopaxi and Sangay volcanoes have weekly eruption alerts: 2022 Cotopaxi lahar risk led to Latacunga evacuations. El Niño events flood Guayas and Los Ríos provinces every 2-7 years; 2023 El Niño killed 20+. Install the SNGR (National Risk Management) app, avoid Cotopaxi without IG-EPN permit, budget USD cash for flight cancellations, and follow UE-ECU evacuation plans in USD-based advisories.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Don't rush or point

Don't tap your wrist to indicate time urgency, it's considered rude and pushy. Personal space is closer than in North America or Europe, so don't back away during conversations. Greet women with a single kiss on the cheek and men with a handshake.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Panama hats & chocolate

Despite the name, Panama hats (sombreros de paja toquilla) actually originate from Ecuador, buy an authentic one in Cuenca or Montecristi for a fraction of international prices. Ecuadorian chocolate is among the world's finest, made from native Arriba Nacional cacao. Otavaleño woven textiles, tagua nut carvings (vegetable ivory), and single-origin coffee complete the list.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • The Galapagos Islands inspired Darwin's theory of evolution. Many species there, like marine iguanas and giant tortoises, exist nowhere else on Earth.
  • Ecuador uses the US dollar as its official currency, no need to exchange money. ATMs dispense US dollars.
  • Ecuador is named after the equator. At the Mitad del Mundo monument near Quito, you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere.
