Tipping in Spain

Tipping is not expected in Spain and menu prices already include tax. In casual bars and family restaurants locals just round up or leave a few coins, and 1 to 2 euros per person is plenty. In upscale places check the bill for servicio incluido; if service is not listed, 5 to 10 percent for good service is generous.

Bargaining in Spain

Bargaining culture is virtually absent in Spain, prices in shops, restaurants, and markets are fixed. The exception is large antique fairs (El Rastro in Madrid) where light negotiation on unique items is occasionally welcome.

Scams and safety in Spain

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Distraction pickpocketing in tourist areas

In Barcelona's La Rambla, Gothic Quarter and metro L3 to Sagrada Família, and Madrid's Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía, thieves work in teams: one sprays 'bird droppings' or ketchup on your clothes and 'helpfully' cleans you while an accomplice takes your phone or wallet. Others hand you a clipboard petition. Ignore strangers touching your clothes and keep valuables in an inside pocket.

Scam or crime Drive-by phone and bag snatching

In central Madrid and Barcelona, thieves ride scooters up onto the pavement and rip phones or bags from tourists' hands before accelerating away. Hotspots include La Rambla, Paseo de Gracia, Gran Vía and around Plaza Mayor. Don't walk with a phone in your hand or a bag on your street-side shoulder, keep the strap diagonal across your body and phone inside a zipped pocket.

Scam or crime Fake police wallet check

In Madrid, Barcelona and tourist districts of Seville and Granada, scammers in plainclothes flash a fake badge and ask to 'verify your wallet for counterfeit notes', then palm cash or cards during the inspection. Real Spanish police (Policía Nacional, Guardia Civil) never check wallets. Ask for uniformed officers and insist on going to the nearest comisaría to resolve any real issue.

Law Unlicensed taxi. Passenger fined too

At Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat airports, unlicensed 'private driver' touts inside terminals charge 3–4 times the official fare. Spanish law fines passengers up to 600 euros for using an unlicensed taxi, enforcement happens at roadblocks on airport exits. Use only white Madrid cabs with a red stripe or black-and-yellow Barcelona cabs from the marked rank outside the terminal.

Nature Wildfires and extreme heat in summer

Summer wildfires rage across Spain and the Balearic and Canary Islands; temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and heat-domes close forests. Causing a wildfire in Spain, even accidentally with a cigarette or grill, is a criminal offence with fines and jail. Check the AEMET app for heat alerts and Protección Civil for evacuation orders, especially in Andalucía, Galicia and Mallorca.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Respect siesta hours

Don't criticize bullfighting to locals you just met, it's a divisive topic best avoided. Respect siesta hours (2–5 PM) by not making noise or expecting shops to be open. Don't beckon someone by waving with an upturned palm.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Olive oil, Jamón & saffron

Spanish extra virgin olive oil is the world's most produced and among the finest, buy DOP varieties from Jaén or Priego de Córdoba. Vacuum-packed jamón ibérico is the ultimate edible souvenir (check customs regulations). Saffron from La Mancha (azafrán) is prized globally. Rioja or Ribera del Duero wines, hand-painted ceramic tiles, leather goods, and smoked paprika (pimentón de la Vera) are other Spanish classics.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Mostly free motorways

Most Spanish motorways are now free after toll concessions expired in 2021–2024. Some tolled tunnels remain in Catalonia (€4–12), and a few toll sections around Barcelona and the Basque Country still apply. Overall, Spain is one of the cheapest countries in Western Europe for driving.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Spain's siesta tradition means many shops close from 2-5 PM. Plan your shopping accordingly, especially outside big cities.
  • Tapas originated when bartenders placed a small plate (tapa = "lid") over drinks to keep flies out. In some cities like Granada, tapas are still free with drinks.
  • Spaniards eat dinner late, usually between 9 and 11 PM. Many restaurants do not open their kitchens for dinner until 8:30 PM.

How much does a day in Spain cost, without flights and hotel?

Roughly €45 (about $51) a day at fair prices, or €106 (about $120) at tourist prices. That covers two meals, a coffee, a bottle of water, a beer, two transit rides and a short taxi ride. Sightseeing comes on top (€8 – €20 for a top museum or attraction), and accommodation is not included.

Do you tip in Spain, and how much?

Tipping is not expected in Spain and menu prices already include tax. In casual bars and family restaurants locals just round up or leave a few coins, and 1 to 2 euros per person is plenty. In upscale places check the bill for servicio incluido; if service is not listed, 5 to 10 percent for good service is generous.

What currency does Spain use?

The euro (EUR). On October 3, 2026, 1 USD was worth 0.8888 EUR. Card terminals and ATMs that offer to charge you in your home currency usually give a worse rate, so pay in EUR.

Budget roughly €45 (about $51) a day for food, drinks and getting around at local prices, or about €106 (about $120) at tourist prices. Add €8 – €20 for each major sight, plus your accommodation.

What is the emergency number in Spain?

Call 112, the general emergency number. Direct lines: police 091, ambulance 061, fire brigade 080.
