Tipping in Portugal

Tipping is not mandatory in Portugal, but 5–10% is appreciated at sit-down restaurants. In Lisbon and Porto, tourists often round up the bill. Note that "couvert" (bread and appetizers brought to the table) is charged separately and is optional, you can send it back.

Bargaining in Portugal

Bargaining is not part of everyday Portuguese culture. At Feira da Ladra (Lisbon's famous flea market) or antique shops, politely asking for a discount on unique or used items is acceptable and may yield 10–15% off.

Scams and safety in Portugal

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Drug sellers in Bairro Alto and Porto

Near Rossio, Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré in Lisbon, and along Porto's Galerias de Paris, men approach tourists offering hash, cocaine or 'MDMA'. The product is usually fake (bay leaves, soap) but the shakedown that follows can cost 200–500 euros. Personal drug possession is decriminalised, not legal; buying from street is a crime. Walk past politely without engaging.

Law Alcohol and drone bans at tourist sites

Albufeira and Lagos in the Algarve fine street drinking 150–1,500 euros under 2024 municipal codes. Drones over Jerónimos Monastery, Sintra palaces, Óbidos and Porto's Douro bridges require ANAC registration; flying without it costs 500–5,000 euros plus confiscation. Drink only in licensed premises, register drones before landing at LIS, and never overfly a monument.

Nature Atlantic rip tides and Algarve currents

Portugal's Atlantic coast has some of Europe's strongest rip currents. Nazaré, Ericeira, Costa da Caparica and Algarve beaches like Praia da Rocha average 20 drownings per year. Red flags mean no swimming, enforced with 100-euro fines. Yellow = caution. Swim only between flags where lifeguards are present, never at dawn or dusk, and never enter the water after alcohol.

Emergency numbers in Portugal

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 112 Emergency number Covers police, ambulance, and fire brigade

Portugal uses 112 as the single emergency number. Calls are routed by the PSP dispatch centre to police (PSP or GNR), ambulance (INEM), or fire brigade (Bombeiros). No separate public dial-direct numbers.

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Skip the OK gesture

The OK gesture (thumb-index circle) is considered vulgar in Portugal. Also, don't compare Portugal to Spain or treat it as Spain's extension. Portuguese are proud of their distinct identity and language.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Port wine, cork & sardines

Port wine from the Douro Valley is Portugal's most celebrated export, visit lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia for tastings and purchases. Cork products (Portugal produces over half the world's cork) range from wallets to umbrellas and are uniquely Portuguese. Canned sardines in artful vintage packaging make fun gifts. Pastéis de nata molds, hand-painted azulejo tile replicas, and ginjinha (cherry liqueur) are other beloved picks.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Electronic tolls

Many Portuguese motorways have electronic-only tolls with no booths, this confuses tourists. Rent a Via Verde Visitors device at the airport (€6 + tolls) or register your card via EASYToll. Rental cars often include a transponder. Unpaid tolls incur surcharges of €4–6, escalating to €25–100+.

Did you know? 4 notes

  • Pasteis de nata (custard tarts) are Portugal's iconic pastry. The original recipe from Belem has been a closely guarded secret since 1837.
  • The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, signed in 1373, is the oldest alliance in the world that is still in force today.
  • Fado is Portugal's hauntingly beautiful traditional music, expressing saudade, a deep longing. Lisbon's Alfama district is the best place to hear it live.
  • Port wine is Portugal's most famous export and national drink, produced in the Douro Valley and exported from Porto.
