Tipping in France

In France service is included in restaurant and café prices by law (service compris), so tipping is never obligatory. Locals simply leave small change or round up, for example a euro or two for a good meal. There is no expectation of a percentage tip as in some countries.

Bargaining in France

Prices are fixed in French shops, restaurants and markets, and bargaining is not part of the culture. The exception is flea markets (marchés aux puces) and brocantes selling antiques or second-hand goods, where polite negotiation is accepted. Elsewhere, asking for a discount is awkward and rarely works.

Scams and safety in France

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Friendship bracelet and petition scams near Sacré-Cœur

On the steps below Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre and around the Eiffel Tower, groups tie a string bracelet on your wrist or ask you to sign a petition, then demand money or distract you while an accomplice picks your pocket. Keep your hands to yourself, say a firm no, and walk on without stopping.

Scam or crime Pickpockets on metro line 1 and RER B

Crowded metro line 1 (which links many sights) and RER B (the airport line) are pickpocket hotspots, especially at door-closing moments and busy stations like Châtelet. Carry bags in front of you, keep phones and wallets out of back pockets, and be wary of staged jostling or sudden crowds.

Scam or crime Fake taxi touts at Charles de Gaulle airport

Inside the CDG terminals, men may approach offering a taxi or private car, then charge two or three times the fair rate. Official Paris taxis use the marked ranks outside and charge a fixed fare of 56€ to the Right Bank or 65€ to the Left Bank. Ignore anyone soliciting you indoors.

Law Tourist menu and water or cover charge overcharging

Near major sights, some restaurants push pricey set tourist menus, add charges for bread or a cover, or serve costly bottled water when free tap water is your right. By French law menu prices must be displayed outside, service is included in the price, and you may request free tap water (une carafe d'eau). Check the posted prices before sitting down.

Emergency numbers in France

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 112 Emergency number

112 is the free EU-wide emergency number, reachable from any phone even without a SIM as long as a network is in range. In France, dial 15 for medical emergencies (SAMU), 17 for police, and 18 for the fire brigade (who also handle many medical calls).

Medical costs

  • Visit to a general practitioner A standard GP consultation in France costs around 30 to 60 USD upfront for a tourist. EU visitors with a valid EHIC card pay the regulated fee and can be reimbursed, while others usually pay in full and claim later through travel insurance. $35 – $60 ≈ €31 – €53
  • One night in hospital A night in a French public hospital is often billed at roughly 1,500 to 3,000 USD for an uninsured tourist, before doctors' fees and procedures. Costs rise quickly with surgery or intensive care, so comprehensive travel health insurance is strongly recommended. $1,500 – $3,000 ≈ €1,330 – €2,670
  • Ambulance call-out An ambulance transport in France typically costs around 100 to 400 USD depending on distance and level of care, billed to the patient if not covered. Dial 15 (SAMU) or 112 in a medical emergency; the call itself is free, but the transport and treatment are charged. $100 – $400 ≈ €89 – €355
  • Emergency dental treatment An emergency dental visit in France, such as treating pain or a simple filling, typically costs around 50 to 200 USD for a tourist paying upfront. More involved work like a crown or extraction costs more, so dental travel cover is worth having. $50 – $200 ≈ €44 – €180

Typical private prices a tourist pays without insurance.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Always say bonjour when you enter

A polite bonjour (or bonsoir in the evening) when entering a shop, bakery or café is essential etiquette in France, as is merci and au revoir on leaving. Skipping the greeting reads as rude and often gets a cooler welcome. A simple bonjour, even before asking in English, opens doors.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Skip the Champs-Élysées and Montmartre stalls

Souvenir stalls along the Champs-Élysées and around Montmartre charge several times more for the same magnets and mini Eiffel Towers sold cheaply elsewhere. For everyday items and edible gifts, supermarkets like Monoprix or Carrefour offer fair fixed prices. For something local, look for makers' markets or museum shops.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Autoroute tolls, no vignette needed

France has no motorway vignette. Instead most autoroutes charge distance-based tolls (péages); you take a ticket on entry and pay by card or cash on exit. Costs add up over long trips, so budget for them and for fuel, which is cheapest at supermarket stations rather than on the motorway.

Did you know? 4 notes

  • In any French restaurant or café you can ask for une carafe d'eau, a free jug of tap water, instead of paying for bottled water. It is perfectly normal and expected, so there is no need to buy pricey bottles with your meal.
  • Many French national museums, such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée de l'Orangerie, offer free admission on the first Sunday of the month, and most are always free for under-18s. Policies vary by museum, so check each site before you go and expect bigger crowds on free days.
  • In France the price you see is the price you pay: VAT and the service charge are already included in menu and shop prices by law. There are no surprise taxes added at the till and no obligatory service fee on your restaurant bill, which makes budgeting straightforward.
  • Non-EU residents can claim a VAT refund of about 16 percent on purchases over 175 euros at participating stores by filling out a form and having it stamped at customs when leaving the EU.
