When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, choose IDR. The rate it offers is almost always worse.

Bargaining is common at traditional markets (pasar) and souvenir stalls, start at 40-50% of the initial price. In shops with price tags, prices are usually fixed.
What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.
On Kuta, Seminyak and Ubud's tourist strips, free-standing ATMs are skimmed weekly, cloned cards drain 5–40 million rupiah within 48 hours. The Bali police anti-fraud unit confirms 300+ tourist cases per year. Use only ATMs inside BCA, Mandiri or BNI bank branches during banking hours, cover the keypad, and set a travel-only card with 1,000 USD limit for Indonesia.
Bali's ubiquitous scooter rentals charge 50,000–100,000 rupiah per day then claim 5–20 million rupiah in 'damage' at return, dents, scratches or 'broken clutch cable' already present. Passport retention as deposit is illegal but common. Photograph every angle on pickup with timestamp, leave cash deposit only (500,000 rupiah max), and decline any bike without insurance sticker.
Indonesia executes drug traffickers. Bali Nine members were shot in 2015 for 8 grams of heroin. Personal possession of even CBD oil can mean 4–12 years prison. Since January 2026 the new criminal code punishes unmarried cohabitation (including hotel rooms) with 6 months jail if reported by a family member. Don't bring any drug, marijuana or CBD product; book hotels that don't ask marital status for couples in rupiah.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mt Merapi (Java) and Agung (Bali) are active with weekly eruption alerts. The 2018 Sulawesi tsunami killed 4,340; 2022 Anak Krakatau triggered closures. Wet-season rip currents at Kuta, Nusa Lembongan and Gili islands drown 40+ tourists per year. Install the BNPB disaster app, buy evacuation-cover insurance quoted in rupiah, and never swim outside flag lines.
Indonesia uses 112 as its national emergency number, but it is only live in the cities and districts that have joined, so coverage is patchy. If 112 does not connect, use the separate lines: 110 police, 113 fire, 119 medical.
Never use your left hand for giving or receiving anything, it's considered unclean. Point with your thumb instead of your index finger, as finger-pointing is very rude. Don't touch anyone's head, especially children's.
Batik fabric is Indonesia's UNESCO-recognized textile art, buy hand-drawn (batik tulis) pieces in Yogyakarta or Solo for the highest quality. Balinese wood carvings and silver jewelry from Celuk village are beautiful crafts. Indonesian spices (cloves, nutmeg, vanilla from the Spice Islands) are far cheaper and fresher here. Kopi luwak coffee and wayang (shadow puppet) figures make unique gifts.
Indonesia's toll roads are fully electronic since 2017, no cash is accepted at any booth. Buy a prepaid e-money card (e-Toll, Flazz, or TapCash) at any Indomaret or Alfamart convenience store. The Trans-Java toll totals over Rp 500,000 ($32). Bali has the short Mandara toll road near the airport.
