Tipping in Greece

In Greek tavernas, simply round up the bill, a tip of 5–10% is appreciated but not obligatory. Leave the coins on the table after paying; it is a casual gesture that locals also do.

Bargaining in Greece

Bargaining is not customary in Greek shops or restaurants, prices are fixed. At tourist souvenir markets on islands, you may try asking for a small discount, but expect polite refusal in most cases.

Scams and safety in Greece

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Athens metro and Plaka pickpocketing

On Athens metro line 3 between the airport and Monastiraki, in Plaka's narrow tourist streets and on Syntagma Square, teams create crowding at doors and hotspots. They lift phones and wallets in seconds. In summer high season the risk triples. Keep bags zipped and in front, wallets in front pockets, and never rest a phone on a taverna table: 50% of thefts happen from tables.

Scam or crime Adult-club drink padding scam

In Athens's Syntagma and Psiri districts and tourist strips of Mykonos and Thessaloniki, attractive 'locals' invite lone travellers for 'one drink', then produce bills of 800–2,000 euros with bouncers blocking the exit until you pay by card. Never follow strangers into an unmarked bar, keep card in hand during payment, and demand a physical itemised receipt. Greek law requires one.

Law Antiquity export ban. Airport arrests

Greek law bans the export of ANY stone, shell, coin or fragment older than 1453 AD without a ministry permit. Tourists are arrested at Athens and Thessaloniki airports each summer for carrying a pebble from Delphi or a seashell from Santorini, penalties include a 1,000–10,000 euro fine and possible prison. Buy souvenirs from licensed shops with a paper certificate and leave every beach stone behind.

Law Swimwear and nightlife fines on Islands

Several Greek islands. Hydra, Spetses, Santorini, Mykonos, fine tourists 200–1,500 euros for walking shirtless or in bikinis outside beaches, urinating in public, or making loud noise after 23:00. Mykonos bans disposable plastics (up to 500 EUR fine). Dress properly off the beach, carry a lightweight cover-up, and respect the 'koini isychia' (quiet hours) from 15:00–17:30 and after 23:00.

Nature Summer wildfires on Greek Islands

June–October wildfires in Rhodes, Corfu, Evia, Crete and mainland Attica can force mass tourist evacuations within hours (30,000 evacuated in Rhodes 2023). Temperatures over 45 °C and strong meltemi winds spread flames fast. Install the '112 Greece' app for SMS alerts, note your hotel's muster point, and keep passports and a water bottle in a grab-bag.

  • Doctor visit Private clinic, general consultation without insurance $55 – $130 ≈ €49 – €115

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Avoid the open palm

Never show an open palm facing someone (moutza), it's deeply offensive, equivalent to a strong insult in Greece. Don't beckon with palm up either. Use a closed-hand wave instead to avoid any misunderstanding.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Olive oil, Mastic & honey

Greek extra virgin olive oil is among the world's best, buy directly from producers for superior quality and price. Mastic products from Chios (gum, liqueur, sweets) are unique to Greece. Thyme honey from the islands is exceptionally aromatic. Ouzo, tsipouro, natural sea sponges from Kalymnos, and kombolói (worry beads) are other classic picks.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Motorway tolls

Motorway tolls: Greece uses a distance based toll system on major motorways. Payment is accepted in cash or by card at staffed booths, or via an electronic transponder (e-pass) for faster passage. Prices vary by route and vehicle category. A car driving the A1 from Athens to Thessaloniki passes ten mainline toll plazas and pays roughly 36 euros one way at 2026 rates. Always use the designated lanes.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Greece has between 1,200 and 6,000 islands (depending on what counts), but only about 230 are inhabited. Each has its own character.
  • Greece is widely recognized as the birthplace of democracy, the Olympic Games, and Western philosophy. Athens, its capital, has been continuously inhabited for over 7,000 years, serving as the cradle of classical civilization.
  • In Greece, name days (the feast day of the saint you're named after) are celebrated more than birthdays. Shops sell flowers and gifts for the occasion.

Common questions about prices in Greece

Is Greece expensive to visit?

Short answer: on the pricey side, even at local prices. Fair prices sit 45% above the 60-country median, and tourist prices are about 2.5× the fair price. On the TruePrice Index, Greece scores 145, the 14th most expensive of the 60 countries I track.

How much does a day in Greece cost, without flights and hotel?

Roughly €32 (about $36) a day at fair prices, or €75 (about $84) at tourist prices. That covers two meals, a coffee, a bottle of water, a beer, two transit rides and a short taxi ride. Sightseeing comes on top (€10 – €30 for a top museum or attraction), and accommodation is not included.

Do you tip in Greece, and how much?

In Greek tavernas, simply round up the bill, a tip of 5–10% is appreciated but not obligatory. Leave the coins on the table after paying; it is a casual gesture that locals also do.

What currency does Greece use?

The euro (EUR). On October 3, 2026, 1 USD was worth 0.8888 EUR. Card terminals and ATMs that offer to charge you in your home currency usually give a worse rate, so pay in EUR.

How much is a meal and a beer in Greece?

A restaurant main course is €10 – €20 (about $11 – $23) at fair prices, while tourist menus charge €25 – €50. A street food meal runs €3.50 – €5.00. A local beer is €3.50 – €6.00 (about $3.90 – $6.80), or €7 – €13 in tourist bars.

How much money should I bring to Greece?

Budget roughly €32 (about $36) a day for food, drinks and getting around at local prices, or about €75 (about $84) at tourist prices. Add €10 – €30 for each major sight, plus your accommodation.

What is the emergency number in Greece?

Call 112, the general emergency number. Direct lines: police 100, ambulance 166, fire brigade 199.
