Tipping in Chile

Tip around 10% in Chilean restaurants, the service charge is not usually included. In Santiago, some upscale restaurants add a "propina sugerida" line on the bill; you can adjust it or pay what you feel is appropriate.

Bargaining in Chile

Bargaining is acceptable at craft markets ("ferias artesanales") and flea markets ("persa") in Chile. In regular shops and malls prices are firmly fixed. Be friendly and patient, pushing too hard is considered rude.

Scams and safety in Chile

What tourists actually run into, from overcharging tricks to local laws. Open any item for the details.

Scam or crime Santiago metro and Bellavista pickpocketing

Santiago metro and Bellavista pickpocketing: on Santiago Metro lines 1 and 5 at rush hour, and in the Bellavista and Lastarria nightlife districts, teams shove at the doors and lift phones and wallets in seconds. Valparaíso's Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción see the same on cruise ship days. Keep bags zipped and in front, carry small change in Chilean pesos for buses, and never leave a drink unattended, as the FCDO reports drink spiking around Bellavista.

Scam or crime Airport and 'Official transfer' overcharge

At Santiago SCL airport, touts inside Arrivals wear fake 'oficial' badges and charge 45,000–80,000 chilean peso pesos for a trip that costs 12,000 via Uber or 1,900 by Centropuerto bus. Use Uber/Cabify from the marked pickup zone above ground level, or take the Centropuerto bus to Pajaritos metro station. Never follow anyone with a handwritten sign.

Scam or crime Drink spiking in Santiago bars

Drink spiking occurs in nightclubs and bars in Suecia and Bellavista areas of Santiago, leaving victims vulnerable to theft or assault. Keep drinks in sight and avoid accepting drinks from strangers.

Nature Earthquakes, tsunamis and Atacama altitude

Chile sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the 2010 Maule M8.8 killed 500+ and triggered a tsunami to Japan. ONEMI runs coastal tsunami-evacuation routes; memorise the blue/white signs. San Pedro de Atacama (2,408 m) and the Uyuni border-crossing (4,500 m) cause altitude sickness, arrive gradually, drink coca tea legally purchased in chilean peso. Install the ONEMI app for alerts.

Emergency numbers in Chile

Not sure who you need? Call this one. 133 Police

In Chile, there is no single universal emergency number. Dial 133 for Carabineros (police), 131 for ambulance (SAMU), 132 for fire (Bomberos).

Medical costs

  • Doctor visit Private clinic, general consultation without insurance $40 – $80 ≈ CL$36,800 – CL$73,600

Typical private prices a tourist pays without insurance.

Good to know before you go

Gestures and etiquette 1 note

Watch slang & gestures

"Weón" can be both a friendly term and a serious insult depending on context, never use it with strangers. The "tacaño" gesture (tapping your elbow) to imply someone is cheap is considered very offensive. Always greet and say goodbye to everyone individually in a social gathering.

Buying souvenirs 1 note

Lapis Lazuli & Chilean wine

Chile is one of the few places in the world where lapis lazuli is mined, buy jewelry or carved pieces from certified shops in Santiago. Chilean wine (especially Carmenère, the country's signature grape) is excellent value. Merquén (Mapuche smoked chili) adds unique flavor to any kitchen, and pisco from the Elqui Valley makes a great gift.

Driving and tolls 1 note

Best roads in South America

Chile has the best roads in South America with extensive tolls on Ruta 5 (Pan-American Highway). Santiago to Puerto Montt costs about CLP 30,000–40,000 ($30–40). Santiago's urban motorways are electronic TAG only, no cash. Verify your rental car has a TAG. Intercity toll plazas accept cash and card.

Did you know? 3 notes

  • Chile is the longest north-to-south country in the world, stretching over 4,300 km, from desert in the north to glaciers in the south.
  • The Atacama Desert is the driest place on Earth. Some areas have never recorded rainfall. Its clear skies make it the world's best location for stargazing.
  • Easter Island (Rapa Nui), one of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth, belongs to Chile. Its 900+ mysterious moai statues were carved between 1250-1500 AD.
